Barnes Ward

is served by;

Cllr Paul Hodgins          Cllr Christine Percival      Cllr Rita Palmer

Abandon The Sale Of Barn Elms!

Barnes residents are up in arms about the proposed sale of 2.2. hectares of Barn Elms – a valuable sporting resource for local people. Newly-elected Councillor Rita Palmer said: “In the December by-election Barnes residents gave a very clear message to Councillor Knight. There is fierce local opposition to the sell-off of publicly-owned land”.

Barnes Councillor Christine Percival added: “With £60m of your money in his pocket, Councillor Knight must abandon his plan to sell off 2.2 hectares of Barn Elms to fund the upgrading of the playing fields. Barn Elms was given to the people of Barnes and all the land should be used for their benefit and the benefit of  other Borough residents – not to enable commercial companies to make money by running private clubs”.

Councillor Paul Hodgins concluded: “We support the upgrading of the playing fields at Barn Elms. But Liberal Councillor Knight has presided over an increase in the Council’s reserves to £60m – although he had promised in 2006 to return £700 to every family in the Borough. With all this money in the coffers he can afford to fund the improvements without selling this land which belongs to the people of the Borough”

Conservatives Treble Their Lead

Cllr Rita Palmer was elected on December 6th 2007 as the newest Councillor for Richmond-upon-Thames.

In a convincing win the margin for this seat, gained in 2006, was trebled.

Rita won the seat with an absolute majority of the votes cast.

Here are the votes cast for each candidate.

Rita Grace Sarah Palmer; Conservative       1643 (56%)

Barbara Westmorland:     Liberal Democrat  1103 (38%)

Ann Frederica Neimer;     Labour                   91  (3%)

James Richard Page;       Green                    87  (3%)

Turnout was 41.2%

Congratulations to Rita and her campaign team on a superb result.
